Determining the Bankability of an Entire Electricity Sector

The Challenge:

Malawi is endowed with enormous renewable energy potential and the electricity sector has undergone a range of reforms towards sector bankability. However, despite these reforms, the country has not succeeded in attracting quality private sector participation in the generation space. We had to determine what needed to be done to solve this issue.

What We Did:

We identified the actual bottlenecks to quality private sector participation and recommended a holistic project-based approach as a means to deal with study fatigue that the country has suffered and to actually address the key bottlenecks so as to unlock sector bankability.

Impact:

The client has adopted the holistic intervention approach.

Designing the De-risking of Grid Based Renewables Programme

The Challenge:

The country was suffering from what we would term study fatigue – a term used to explain the fatigue from consultants conducting studies on end without resulting into any actionable implementation of recommendations. The challenge faced was how to actually conduct studies without falling into the same trap.

What We Did:

We designed an intervention approach that was holistic in nature that ensured that implementation of the intervention was concurrent with the conduct of studies that are tried and tested in real time through the intervention.
